Forever Wild reveals a different side to the familiar fairy tale of Red Riding Hood. Originally a coming of age story, Red Riding Hood was told to young women to help them navigate their adolescence, changing body, and awakening sexuality and all of the challenges associated with burgeoning womanhood. Including of course their monthly bleed. Knowledge passed down from Grandmother to Mother to Daughter, this story became the way women encouraged girls to 'accept' during this confusing time of change, and to embrace their wildness, not deny it. Also the Grandmothers explained other things they would now need to be aware of - the desire of men. As if they could smell it, the hounds would be drawn to her blossoming womanhood. And the only way to stave off a hound - was with a Wolf. They taught their daughters that the power of the wild is inside you. It is not to be silenced or shamed. And it cannot be tamed. It walks beside you at all times. It is a part of you. Not just at the time of the full moon, but always… you ARE the Wolf. You are Forever Wild. The tale of a betrayed river goddess. Once our waterways were a sacred source of life, but with the advancement of industry they are now polluted and little more than dumping grounds for mankind's disposable attitude. Written as a tribute to Esme's friend and colleague, Adrian Cooper, who passed away in 2006 after drowning in the River Thames, Dirty River is also an apology to the river Herself for the blame Esme misplaced on Her in her grief. Exclusive behind the scenes footage from the music video shoot for Dirty River, filmed on location at TankSpace and Jay Hillyer's studio, November 2020. In order to fully tell the tale of this betrayed river Goddess, we needed a safe body of water to film in, which isn't easy... Enter TankSpace! Kai and the team were more than happy to host our crew for the day as we prepared to shoot this epic music video which included lip-syncing to the track underwater... This song is about the shame I carried following the termination of a pregnancy when I was 21. It confronts the body dysphoria I felt, alongside the emotional rollercoaster of coming to terms with my decision, not because I didn’t want to go through with it - but because I did. I have never wanted to have children of my own, but have felt the pressure of society’s expectation of my role as a woman to be a ‘child-bearer’ in order to somehow be considered whole. This concept that if you do not conform to a hetero-normative nuclear family lifestyle that somehow you are lacking, or in denial. You are a different kind of woman; a ‘loose’ woman, “promiscuous”, uncontrollable, a jezebel, a whore. Witch. All these 'Wild Woman' traits have been the core of my Art, from Red Riding Hood to river goddesses and beyond. I'm constantly fascinated and inspired about how women are viewed in our society; how we are treated when we conform, and when we don’t. The video was shot on location in New York, USA at the iconic Central Park in the snow, echoing the lyrics "let bloodflow purify me like snow.."
